Crews responded to a report of smoke coming from a door and the roof of a building at 812 Pleasant Street in Worcester just after 6 p.m. on Monday, May 1, Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche told Daily Voice.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the side door of a strip mall-type structure, which houses several businesses like U-home Decor Store and Worcester Flower Shop.

The fire was eventually brought up to three alarms and took several hours to contain, Roche said.

The building was deemed a total loss and one firefighter was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
